- The selected artist will receive:
- A $3,000 stipend (paid in two installments: $2000 at the start and the $1000 after de-installation.
- A studio space at The Museum of Human Achievement (MoHA)
- 1-on-1 mentorship with a practicing artist (you’ll complete a questionnaire during orientation to help us match you with a CMP alum)
- Standard promotion and professional documentation of your work (see examples on Instagram @cagematchproject
- Access to MoHA’s shared tools
- 24-hour access to the outdoor caged trailer and studio space
- Installation support to help build your final presentation
El artista seleccionado recibirá:

About the I/O residency
“I/O” stands for “Input/Output”
A reference to the relationship between where art is made (the studio) and where it’s shared (the gallery).
We’re especially excited to work with artists who think outside the traditional white-cube gallery, and who are interested in how their work interacts with space, time, and the natural environment.
We’re prioritizing emerging artists–especially current undergraduates and recent graduates–to give more opportunities to explore and share their work in a public setting.
As part of this application, you’ll be asked to submit a drawing or media collage showing your ideas for the space. We’ll provide you with a template of the cage’s outline and measurements to help you sketch your proposal.

Una referencia a la relación entre el lugar donde se crea el arte (el taller) y donde se comparte (la galería).
Estamos especialmente interesados en trabajar con artistas que piensen más allá de la galería tradicional de cubo blanco, y que tengan curiosidad por cómo su trabajo interactúa con el espacio, el tiempo y el entorno natural. Damos prioridad a los artistas emergentes — especialmente a estudiantes universitarios actuales y egresados recientes — para darles más oportunidades de explorar y compartir su trabajo en espacios públicos.

This summer, we’re inviting (1) one emerging artist or artist team for our summer residency with an opportunity to receive financial support and a studio for (8) eight weeks. During this time, the Artist in residence will work towards an installation at the end of their residency. Accepted applicants will receive a $3000 stipend and eight weeks of studio space at The Museum of Human Achievement.
We are giving preference to emerging artists to provide crucial independent space and time to develop their practice. We seek to support emerging artists who identify as queer (LGBTQIA+), Black, Indigenous, Artists of Color (BIPOC), gender non-conforming, and/or female-identifying. This opportunity is available for emerging artists in the Austin–Round Rock–Georgetown County Areas (Bastrop, Caldwell, Hays, Travis, and Williamson counties).
Cage Match Project (CMP) is a unique outdoor gallery space built inside a large, weathered metal trailer – 20 feet long, 8 feet wide, and 7 feet tall. This industrial cage sits in a gravel parking lot in Austin, Texas, where it’s open to the elements and viewable by the public 24/7.
Artists who show work here are invited to treat the trailer not just as a place to display art, but as part of the story itself–a space to explore themes of struggle, history, place, and process.
Este verano invitamos a (1) un artista emergente o colectivo artístico para nuestra residencia de verano, con la oportunidad de recibir apoyo económico y un taller durante (8) ocho semanas. Durante este tiempo, el artista residente trabajará en la creación de una instalación que se expondrá al final de la residencia. Los candidatos aceptados recibirán un estipendio de $3,000 USD y ocho semanas de espacio en el taller del Museum of Human Achievement.

Cage Match Project (CMP) es un espacio de galería al aire libre único, construido dentro de un gran remolque metálico envejecido — 6 metros de largo, 2.4 metros de ancho y 2.1 metros de alto. Esta jaula industrial se encuentra en un estacionamiento de grava en Austin, Texas, donde está expuesta a la intemperie y es visible para el público las 24 horas, los 7 días de la semana.
Se invita a los artistas que exponen aquí a considerar el remolque no solo como un lugar donde mostrar su obra, sino como parte de la propia historia: un espacio para explorar temas como la lucha, la historia, el lugar y el proceso.
About the Space
Cage Match Project supports artists who are thinking beyond the traditional white-cube gallery. We’re especially interested in proposals that explore how artwork can engage with space, time, and the natural environment. As a reminder all exhibition proposals should take into account that the artwork will be in constant exposure to wind, rain, sunlight and other natural elements.
